Medical Jargon

Admission :

Time you arrive to be admitted onto the trial.

Blinded Study :

Volunteers are unaware if they are receiving the active medication or a placebo.

Blood Round :
Timed blood collection. You are required to always be on time for these.
BMI :
Body Mass Index – weight and height ratio
Cannula :

An indwelling tube, which remains in a vein during the period in unit, to ease blood collection.

CRO :

Contract Research Organisation

Discharge :
Time when Dr allows you to leave unit
DOA :

Drugs of Abuse: cannabis, cocaine, speed, etc.

Dosing :
Timed medication administration.
ECG :

Electrocardiogram – an electronic readout of your heart rate.

Ethics committee :
An independent panel of people who review and approve studies and study protocols, this must be done before a study can commence.
Follow up :
Final Medical check up at end of trial.
Informed Consent :

A legal document you sign and date along with a witness (usually a Doctor) giving your consent to take part in the clinical trial.

In patient :
Residential stay in unit.
Out Patient :
Visit to the unit that does not require a residential stay in the unit.
Placebo :
‘Dummy Drug’ – some volunteers receive this instead of active medication.
Positive DOA :

Urinalysis result confirming positive drugs of abuse result in urine.

Screening :
Pre-trial medical examination.
Urinalysis :
Analysis of urine
Venepuncture :
Collecting blood sample from the vein using a needle.
